‘빛과 사각형의 변주'     임정은

 

       무수한 입방체가 이루는 유리, 거울, 스테인리스 스틸의 조각은 실내에서 무지개를 흩뿌리며 파노라마를 펼친다.

작가의 작품은 그림자가 어둡다는 고정 관념을 깨고, 형형색색의 그림자를 통해 환상의 공간을 연다. 빛에 의한 떨림과 색채의 번짐, 여울로 만들어지는 형형색색의 그림자를 ‘빛과 사각형의 변주’라 칭한다.

그 너머에 무한한 시공간이 거듭 보이는 듯 착각은 우리의 시각을 현실이 아닌 다른 공간으로 이동시키며, 우리가 정형화된 개념을 탈피할 수 있다는 가능성을 상징한다. 작가의 작품 형식은 크게 평면작업과 반 입체의 성격을 띠는 설치작업으로 나뉜다. 

‘ 사각형의 흔적‘ 또는 ’사각형의 변주‘등의 작품은 반 입체의 성격을 띠는 설치작업이다. 이 작업은 벽에 거는 액자작품의 이미지를 분리하고 액자 틀의 판유리만을 벽면에 수직과 수평의 중첩, 배열과 조합으로 설치하는 형식을 띄고 있다.

즉, 유리조각의 단위(unit)가 모여 무리를 이루는 식의 공간 설치 방식을 채택하고 있다. 단위의 개별성과 더불어 주목할 것은 집적(集積)이라고 설명할 수 있다. 이 것의 사전적 의미는 ‘모아서 쌓음의 형식’이다.

집적(集積)의 설치 형태의 유형은 다양하며, 한자리에 모으거나 흩어지는 형태로 구성한다. 원형. 사각형, 다각형 또는 유기체 형태로 전시장 공간 환경과 주제에 따라 설치하며 조명과 함께 어우러지면서 작품이 완성된다. 작품을 설치하는 과정 자체가 창작이고, 작품인 것이다. 이 유닛의 재료는 얇은 판유리와 거울이다.

철학에서 작품을 의도적으로 ‘미완성’으로 남기는 기법을 ‘논 피니토’(non finito)라 한다. 작가의 작품 자체는 미완성은 아니지만, 설치 전에는 유리조각에 불과한 것이 벽면에 걸리고 빛을 비췄을 때, 비로 서 완성작품이 된다.

  The glass and mirrors and stainless steel pieces create countless cubic forms and it unfolds a panorama of scattering rainbows in the room.

  My works break the stereotypes that shadow is dark, and this opens fantasy space through colorful shadows. Colorful shadows created by trembling and bleeding of light are referred as 'Light and variation of cube'. It gives us illusion that there are infinite time and space beyond.

Our vision moves to another space that is not a reality, and it symbolizes the possibility that we can escape the stereotyped concepts

  My art work is divided mainly into a flat surface or a half three-dimensional installations.

‘Traces of Cube‘ or 'Variation of cube' etc. is of a half three-dimensional installation. Mentioned earlier, this process involves removal of the image in the framed artwork hanging on the walls. Then the separated glass plates are installed by overlapping in vertical and horizontal combination on the wall.

  My spatial installation incorporates a way of gathering pieces of glass into a unit and the collective glass units into a group. Another thing that should be addressed along with individuality of the unit is an integration. A dictionary meaning of the word is a "form of layering by accumulation.”

An accumulation of installation vary in form, it constitutes a form that gathers in one place or scatters. The work is installed in forms of circle, rectangle, polygon or organic form, depending on the installation space and its environment and the theme and the work is completed in harmony with lights. The process of installation becomes the creation itself, which will also be the work. Here, the material of unit is referred to the glass plate or a mirror.

  The technique of work that is intentionally left 'Unfinished' is called 'non finito’ in the philosophy. My work isn’t unfinished itself. But it is just a piece of glass before they are installed on a wall. When lights are shone, it finally becomes a work completed. Translator by Helen Lee
